    Mwonzora bans MDC T candidates selection

    MASVINGO – Weary of a sudden political frenzy that has caught the country's largest opposition party, MDC T secretary general, Douglas Mwonzora has banned all 2018 general elections' candidate selection processes until further notice.
    He said the party is working on a set of guidelines for the selection process and would also want to consider the alliance negotiations that are taking place with other political parties before candidates are chosen.
    Mwonzora said selecting candidates now is illegal and an act of defying the party and its president.
    Selection process for MP candidates, councillors and Senators had kicked off in many parts of the country and these were allegedly being initiated by some provincial leaders.
    Mwonzora told The Mirror in an interview that any process taking place in the party to choose candidates for the 2018 general elections now is illegal. He said he recently wrote a memo to all party structures after realising that some districts have already embarked on the From page 1

    He said the selection of candidates for MPs, councillors and Senators was likely to take place later in the year after the set of guidelines for the process is approved by the party's national executive and national council respectively.
    He confirmed that draft guidelines have already been put together by the Election Directorate of the party which is headed by the national chairman Lovemore Moyo.
    "It has come to the attention of the national leadership that some provincial leaders are trying to initiate candidate selection process for the 2018 elections. The Election Directorate of the party headed by our national chairman has finalised the draft candidate selection rules and regulations for 2018.
    "These will be presented and have to be approved by the national executive and national council first before they are operatinalised," said Mwonzora.
    His memo said the rules and regulations will among other things spell out who qualifies and who doesn't qualify as a candidate adding that the National Council will approve the dates for candidate selection.
    "The attempts to start the candidate selection process at this stage will undermine the Elections Directorate, National Executive and National Council. As you also know under the guidance of of our President, the party is in the process of exploring the possibility of alliances with other democratic forces.
    "The illegal candidate selection process undermines those efforts. It is an act of defiance of the president. It is thus an act of gross indiscipline. To that end all party leaders at all levels are ordered to stop these activities forthwith. All party members are ordered not to participate in this illegality," said the memo.
    Masvingo and Mat North are among the provinces where aspiring candidates were already being invited to submit their applications including birth certificates, CVs  and passport size photos. In Gutu, aspiring candidates were being asked to mobilise transport for the process.top story news
