    Masvingo U12 tennis team shines in SA


    MASVINGO - Masvingo's Under12 tennis team gave a good account of themselves at the just ended Gauteng East and Central Summer Championships held in South Africa where they competed against three other countries from the continent.
    This was the first time that the team took part in the annual tournament which also featured teams from Namibia, Nigeria and hosts South Africa and clinched two silver medals. The team's coach Prive Fanisai confirmed the developments.
    The players also had one of the best games which lasted a record of more than two hours although they failed to proceed to the finals.
    The team got their medals through Alica Musakarurwa from Kylye College who scooped a silver medal in the singles category in the Gauteng Central Championships.
    Strive Bosha of Helen McGhie was the only player who participated in 2 tournaments where he won a silver medal in doubles with his partner from SA in Gauteng East Championship.
    Choloe Chiweshe of Kyle College, Tanatswa Tanyongana from Chikato Primary lost in the semifinals whilst Deborah Mizha of Kyle lost in the quarter finals.
    Although Thompon Thomn of Victoria Junior came fifth in the singles Gauteng Central he was adjudged the player of the tournament after playing for more than 2hours in one match.
    "The talent was unbelievable as they performed beyond expectations as it was their first time to take part in the tournament it was a good learning curve for them because the competition was very tough," said Fanisai.
    She added that tournament presented them with a good opportunity to prepare for other competitions that will be held in Nambia and South Africa in April this year.sport news
