ZINWA attaches 17 Chivhu commercial properties

CHIVHU - The Zimbabwe National Water Authority (ZINWA) which is owed millions of dollars in water bills has taken sterner action in Chivhu where it attached 17 commercial properties in a bid to recover its money.
Those whose properties have been attached had either failed to pay the debts or come forward to make payment plans.
These properties owe a total of $43 000.
ZINWA Co-operate Communications and Marketing Officer Obert Muchena confirmed the move in a telephone interview. He said that they decided to take a legal route so as to recover the debts they are owed by residents and business.
He said they started attaching property two weeks ago after they served letters of final demand in July.
He said they issued residents with summons and encouraged them to visit them and arrange payment plans. Of the 22 commercial clients who had debts, only five co-operated, made payments or came up with payment plans.
He said some of the debtors were supposed to appear in court but they did not turn up thereby forcing the Water Authority to attach properties.
He said if the clients had responded to their letter of demand of demand and arranged payment plans, they would have not dragged them to court.
However, some of the fuming residents whose property had been attached told The Mirror that they are not pleased by the move of losing the property to ZINWA as water is a basic need.
"We are a bitter that we will lose our property because of water debts. Water is a basic commodity and we have a right to it," said one resident.
