Zimsec vehicle drops, loses exam papers

    ALLIEWAY NYONI

MBERENGWA - A Zimbabwe Schools' Exams Council (Zimsec) vehicle ferrying 'O' Level Mathematics examination papers accidentally dropped and lost some of them as it travelled from Mataga to Masase in Mberengwa recently.
The papers were picked by Thando Mukweva, a commuter driver who told The Mirror that he found one set of the papers at Marufu village and another at Ruvabvu. Mukweva left the papers at Chegato High school  and from there relevant authorities were conducted.
"I picked the papers a set at Marufu and the other one was dropped near Ruvabvu and gave them to nearby schools whom I believe contacted the Zimsec," said Mukweva.
Meanwhile 'O' Level exam candidates at Chapungu Secondary School in Mberengwa South were left tongue-tight after they were made to sit for a wrong exam paper with the invigilator insisting the paper was correct.
The candidates were supposed to write an English Paper 1 exam but were surprised to be given a paper 2 which was scheduled for a later date.
The paper was withdrawn 30 minutes later and candidates were given the correct exam. The situation means the English Paper 2 exam had been indirectly leaked. Candidates who were part of the exam told The Mirror that they informed the invigilator of the error but he insisted that the paper was correct.
"We told the invigilator (name supplied) that we had been given the wrong paper but he said it was correct. It was only after private candidates pushed to see the head to that the issue was rectified," said a pupil.
A senior teacher who spoke on condition of anonymity said the error was caused by Exam Centre Officials who are stationed at Chingoma High.
"The invigilator is not to blame because due to a new system in the Ministry we are given exam papers from a selected centre prior to the exam. So, one just assumes the paper given is the correct one," said the senior teacher who cannot be named due to protocol.
Mberengwa District Schools Inspector Ezwell Sibanda refused to comment on the issue and referred questions to Midlands Schools Director, Agnes Gudo who said she was yet to get details as she was in Harare for other work related business
"Am in Harare at the moment but am sure as soon as I get back to Gweru I will be able to find out about this issue," said Gudo.
