CHIRUMANZU – Zanu PF youth working under the banner of Chirumanzu Youth In Action Group are up in arms against Mtao Forestry who they allege has not paid them $10 000 after they made fireguards for the company's tree plantations.
Mtao is subsidiary of Allied Timbers, one of the largest forestry companies in Zimbabwe. The angry youth have threatened to approach the Minister of Environment, Water and Climate Change, Oppah Muchinguri with their complaint.
Youth In Action chairman Justice Wasara said in a telephone interview that his group was tasked to make fireguards in preparation for the fire season and they were supposed to be paid $10 000 for the work.
He complained that the organization has not received a cent for the work. However, Allied Timbers Vorporate Communications Manager Veronica Gutu said the youth have since been given something but the payment was yet to be collected.
Mtao is a large forestry that is 10km outside Mvuma.
"They were given something, it is only that they are yet to collect it, call me tomorrow when I get to the office" said Gutu.
"We signed a contract with Mtao Forestry to make fireguards in preparation of the fire season and we were supposed to get $10 000 for the job. We completed the work but up to now we had not been paid," said Wasara.
The contractors said they managed to complete the job within the stipulated time but could not get their money. They alleged that the company had at one time decided to give them timber worth $10 000 but there were fears then that the youth would sell the timber at lower prices and then destabilise the market. Wasara alleged that of late Mtao had been dilly-dallying over payment and at one time the excuse was that the person they signed the contract with was no longer there after he was allegedly fired for fraud.
The contractors said they approached the new CEO Danny Sithole who ordered the company to look into the matter.
The contractors said they spent almost $4 500 in hiring the tractors and disc harrows to make the fire guards.news
