75-year-old fined $500 for smuggling a Toyota hilux

BEITBRIDGE - Phoso Underson Ngwenya (75) of Masihambisane Drifontein South Africa has pleaded guilty to smuggling a Toyota hilux motor vehicle from South Africa to Zimbabwe and is to serve five days in prison failure or pay a fine of $500.
Ngwenya appeared before magistrate Godswill Mavenge charged with helping one Danmore Guzete with the illegal importation of an $8 300 Toyota hilux.
Age served Ngwenya from custodial sentence.
"Ngwenya's age is not fit for custody, besides he will not learn any lesson if put into custody," said Mavenge.
However, he pointed that Ngwenya had to pay for his crime regardless of his age thus and thus was fined $500 or stay five days in prison.
It is the state case that on October 24, 2016; Guzete bought the vehicle with the intention of importing it to his home in Chiredzi. He wanted to avoid paying duty in the process.
Prosecutor Kuvarega Munyonga said on October 27, 2016,  Ngwenya together with Guzete went to the South African border where they declared that the vehicle was being permanently imported into Zimbabwe.
The vehicle was deregistered in South Africa under SARPCCO clearance number A317180; the two proceeded to the Zimbabwean border where Ngwenya arranged for a temporary import permit (TIP) with number pv32663.
They duped the Zimbabwean border that the vehicle was to be brought back to South Africa before or on November 26, 2016.
However, the scam was discovered by police from Mineral and Border control unit Beitbridge who were doing Anti Smuggling Spot checks at Beitbridge border post, leading to the arrest of the two.
Guzete will also serve effective 30 days imprisonment failure to pay a fine of $700.
The Toyota hilux has since been forfeited to the State.
