President assaulted as fights rock Union

CHIREDZI – Fresh divisions are rocking the Zimbabwe Sugar Milling Industry Workers Union (ZISMIWU) following reports that the organisation's president was assaulted during a feedback meeting in Triangle on Sunday.
Freedom Madungwe confirmed the incident and identified the assailant as Thomas Zunga who is aligned to a faction led by former vice president of the union Godfrey Katerere.
Madungwe alleges that Zunga charged at him and pulled him by the collar before assaulting him on the face using clenched fists. He said he made a Police report and Zunga was arrested and is expected to appear in court soon.
"I went to Triangle on Sunday to address a feedback meeting outside Gibbo Stadium where I wanted to update workers on issues in the Union. While I was addressing Zunga charged at me and assaulted me and I am yet to come to terms with the reasons why he did that.
"The hooligans continued to follow me and Police intervened when they surrounded my car at Chishamiso Stadium. Their actions are surprising and many of them are no longer members of the union since they were expelled by the employer" said Madungwe.
