    ‘Plans afoot to take-over Tongaat’

MASVINGO - Zanu PF Politiburo member Josaya Hungwe has said that plans are afoot to take over Tongaat Hulett and discussions for such a development will take place between a Ministerial Committee and the company's top management based in South Africa.
He said a committee comprising seven ministers that will be chaired by Patrick Chinamasa, Minister of Finance and Economic Development will be convened soon.
Hungwe was speaking at a Zanu PF Masvingo Provincial Coordinating Committee meeting held in preperation for the December Conference at Masvingo Showgrounds two weeks ago.
He said all Tongaat operations in Zimbabwe must be taken over by the people of Masvingo and the company should just be left as a miller.
He argued that such a takeover will benefit the people of Masvingo since all out growers will be drawn from them and a lot of employment would be created.
"We must take over Tongaat and a Ministerial committee will be put in place to work on that. We will not negotiate that takeover with Mutsambiwa (Tongaat Hulett CEO in Zimbabwe) but we will discuss this takeover with more senior people in South Africa," said Hungwe.
The matter came up during a discussion on the companies that are not donating towards the Zanu PF annual conference to be held in Masvingo in December this year.
He said Tongaat should be taken over because it is allegedly controlled by ZimPF.
Many delegates at the PCC meeting looked startled by the suggestions made by Hungwe.
He pinpointed former Cabinet Minister, Dzikamai Mavhaire who is now the national organiser for ZIMPF as one of the persons with immense control on Tongaat.
"Tongaat is controlled by Mavhaire, we want to take it over, isu veMasvingo toitora yova yedu so that our children can get more jobs and create more out growers than is the present situation where there are only a few out growers.
"More out growers will create more jobs for the people of Masvingo. We are fighting Tongaat, and we will not talk to Sydney Mutsambiwa uyu wekwa Gutu, no we want to talk to the owners who are in South Africa.
"We will convene a meeting to be chaired by Chinamasa and seven other Ministers will attend. We will discuss the future of Tongaat very soon," said Hungwe.
He added that he was going to whip all companies into line so that they donate towards the conference.
He warned companies that will not support the conference that they would not get any business from Government including in the Harare – Beitbridge Road dualisation.

    1. This kind of thinking is retrogressive and unacceptable in civilized societies. If these people want to grow cane they can open up more land and grow cane but not to take up land that has been prepared by others.
