MASVINGO – High Court Judge Justice Joseph Mafusire has freed a 24-year-old man who stabbed his wife to death after evidence was led that the accused was mentally unstable at the time that he committed the offence.
Attorney Lucy Chivase who represented Mikian Sandako (24) told the court that the accused heard some blows as he was asleep and he saw his wife as a goblin and he woke up and stabbed her twice above the breast and in the neck using a chisel.
The two had retired to bed. After stabbing his wife, Sandako then stabbed himself once in the neck. Evidence was led in the court that Sandako once sought medical assistance from traditional healers.
Sandako resides at Village 2 Petronella Ranch ,under Chief Chitanga in Mwenezi.
Doctor Patrick Mhaka examined Sandako at Chikurubi Psychiatrist Unit on July 7, 2016 and concluded that at the time of committing the offense the accused was mentally disordered.
The State which was led by Takunda Chikwati states that on August 1, 2015 at around 6pm, Sandako arrived home from Ngundu and his wife Chiedza Regera served him supper and they retired to bed together with their two children.
As they were sleeping, Sandako woke up and stabbed Regera with a chisel on her right breast and left neck and she bled to death.
Sandako then stabbed himself on his left neck with a chisel.
He then called his neighbour with a loud voice and this alerted his father Luzani Sandako and his wife Evangelista Shumba who then went to investigate. They found his door locked but when they called him he came out and fell down.
Sandako was soaked in blood; Luzani then went in the house and found the deceased with her eyes open and bleeding from her wounds.
The case was reported to the Police and the deceased's body was taken for post-mortem.
Doctor Mulunda who is a registered medical practitioner examined Regera's remains on August 3, 2015 at Masvingo General Hospital and concluded that the cause of the death was too much loss of blood from the two wounds.
