    Masvingo man jailed for failing to pay maintenance


    – Failure to pay maintenance and accumulating a backlog of $1 200 has seen a Masvingo-based driver going to jail for four months.
    Chrispen Mavenyengwa (40) of Rujeko C, Masvingo is now serving an effective four months after he was convicted for failure to pay maintenance for his two children and sentenced two weeks ago.
    It is the State case that on January 18, 2016 Mavhenyengwa was ordered by Masvingo Magistrate Court to pay a sum of $150 per month for the upkeep of his two minor children.
    For the period extending from February to September 2016, Mavhenyengwa defaulted to pay and accumulated arrears of US$1 200 in contravention of section 23(1) of the maintenance act chapter 5:9
    Complainant, Sarah Bwanali (39) who resides at Rujeko C reported the case which resulted in Mavenyengwa's arrest. However, Mavhenyengwa highlighted that, he failed to comply with the maintenance court order because he lost his job as a driver at an unidentified company in January this year.
    He was slapped with the jail term despite undertaking to pay the balance by December through pension and revenue from his small motor spare parts shop. Joshua Mundondo prosecuted.
