    Makovah Memorial Golf Tournament tees off

    MASVINGO - Edward Makovah Memorial Golf Tournament tees off this weekend at Masvingo Golf Club with its proceeds earmarked for charity organisations that include the Mayor's Christmas Cheer Fund, Murambwi Foundation and Kapota School for the blind.
    "Various fundraising initiatives will be held to then be donated to Kapota School for the blind, Murambwi Foundation and $300 towards the Masvingo Mayor`s Cheer Fund," said Melody Giya an administrator with PetromocExor who are bankrolling the tournament.
    Murambwi Foundation is responsible for paying exam fees for 13 promising students at Mucheke High School in Masvingo, Giya told The Mirror. The tournament will tee off at Masvingo Golf Club on Saturday until Sunday this weekend and is bankrolled to the tune of $10 000 by the Makovah family and PetromocExor and there are over 60 players who have confirmed participation, Giya added.
    The memorial tournament which is on the Zimbabwe Golf Association calendar as it is a national event will see players from all over the country converging for the event which is in its 10th year.
    Last year the two day tournament was won by … and this year there is likely to be stiff competition from the likes of Ziyad Khan who won the OK Zimbabwe Southern Tours earlier in the year and Liberty Gumisa of Gweru who won the Simon Mezenda Memorial Golf Championship recently at the same venue.
    Makovah who died in 1999 was a keen golfer and philanthropist hence the family decided to continue his legacy by organising a tournament in his name which is played annually in Masvingo.
    The Masvingo Golf Club captain Cassian Mutsambiwa said they are looking forward to a successful tournament witnessed by the number of people who have registered.
    "It's an annual event which we hope our local charity organisations will benefit from. All are welcome to participate in this tournament," he said.sport news
