Gweru to host CBL pool championships national finals

    Competition bigger and better

The biggest annual pool tournament in the country sponsored by Delta Beverages through its Carling Black Label Beer will be held in the City of Progress on November 12 this year at a venue to be advised.
Delta Corporation Marketing Manager, Patricia Murambinda confirmed this in a Press release recently.
"Over 2,000 pool players will participate in the regional and national competitions this year, an increase of about 700 players compared to last year. The last national finals tournament was held successfully in Bulawayo and this year the event will be held in Gweru on the 12th of November 2016," she said.
This year the preliminary rounds will be held in 24 towns and centres as a way of taking the game to the people and giving back to the community. .
"Our vision is to enhance sport and culture in the country… The marriage between Delta and its customers who enjoy pool and drink Carling Black Label dates back to more than 10 years ago and each year has seen the tournament getting more organized and growing from strength to strength," she added.
Last year the national tournament which was held at Bulawayo Raylton Club was
won by Tendai Mubaiwa of Chitungwiza in the men's category and Shamiso Musiiwa of Mutare in the women's category who pocketed $1000 and $500 respectively.
The president of Pool Association of Zimbabwe, Trust Chifadza told The Mirror that last year Delta poured in over $30 000 into the tournament and this year they anticipate an increase in the sponsorship because the event will be bigger as there are more centres and players competing.
"We expect the sponsorship to be bigger this year because of the expansion of the tournament although we don't have figures at the moment. In the men's category there will be prizes for position 1 to 8 and in the women's category for number 1 to 4 because there are very few women who play pool and in some provinces you sometimes get two players registering," said Chifadza.
He also said there are prizes for the regional qualifiers of the tournament which is in its 11th year.
Delta Beverages has brewing and beverage operations across the country covering all major cities and towns and the country's leading brewers with more than 15 beer brands and some 3,000 employees across the country.
The company's portfolio includes global brands such as, Peroni Nastro Azzurro, Miller Genuine Draft; as well as leading local brands such as Golden Pilsener, Bohlinger's, Zambezi and Zambezi Light, and regional brands Castle (South Africa), Carling Black Label (South Africa) and Lion (South Africa). Delta also has growing soft drinks businesses and is one of the country's largest bottlers of Coca-Cola products.
