77 000 Ltrs issued under command agric in Masvingo

MASVINGO – Hundred and thirty-five farmers and irrigation shemes from Masvingo Province have received 77 000 litres of diesel under the Command Agriculture Program, provincial Agritex officer Paul Poshai has said.
The farmers were allocated 60 litres per hectare and they will soon receive inputs like basal fertilizer and seed maize.
"Last week we started distributing diesel to farmers and the process is ongoing. So far over 90% of the 150 intended beneficiaries have received their allocation of diesel so that they can start land preparation," said Poshai.
He said a total of 130 tons of maize seed is required for the command agriculture in the province because only those with functional irrigation schemes will be considered.
However, while the programme has been hailed as good, there is a lot of fear in thepublic that the fuel will be misused and some farmers will sell it instead of using it for agricultural policies.
Poshai said there can never be a full proof system to guard against misuse of the fuel but systems were put in place so that those caught on the wrong side of the law will be arrested.
"After a farmer has been allocated inputs, security details are deployed to escort the inputs. This is to ensure that the inputs are not abused or sold as there is always that temptation and already 14 farmers from Mashonaland Central have been arrested for selling the inputs under this program," said Poshai.
Masvingo Province was given a target to put 4000 hectares of land under command agriculture and produce 20 000 tons of maize but due to vandalism and siltation of dams in irrigation schemes the target may no longer be feasible.top story news
