138 Chikomba tobacco farmers attend workshop

Some 138 tobacco farmers from wards 22 to 30 in Chikomba District recently attended a three-day training workshop organised by Agritex at Sadza Growth Point.
Senior Chikomba District Agricultural Extension Officer Watson Munyai confirmed the development in an interview with The Mirror.
Munyai said the training by resource persons from Agritex, Tobacco Industry Marketing Board, Farmers Development Trust, an organisation which deals with promotion of tobacco covered time specific issues and areas that include seed bed, sight selection on placing seed bed, planting of seed bed, management of seedling up to transplanting.
They also covered aspects of field management which include ridging, marking of holes, water planting, fertilizer and chemical placement.
Munyai said they frequently conduct the kind of workshops but it was their first time to invite resource persons to train tobacco farmers. The workshop was also attended by 21 extension officers and two Agritex supervisors.
He said the workshop was meant to train farmers to be equipped in tobacco production.
"The workshop was meant to ensure that farmers get equipped with skills in tobacco production and that they do it on their own," said Munyai.
He added that a similar workshop was conducted for farmers in Sabi North, new resettlement areas.agriculture news
