    MASVINGO –
The first two judges to be posted to the newly opened Masvingo High Court are now in the city and they assumed duty on Monday with a series of meetings and familiarisation tours of the buildings.
However, Justice Joseph Mafusire and Justice Garainesu Mawadze faced accommodation problems and are currently staying at a local hotel. Most of the houses found in Masvingo are not suitable for their stay because of security and other reasons.
The two judges are hearing their first cases on Monday next week (September 12, 2016).
The deputy secretary for the Judicial Service Commission, Walter Chikwana confirmed the arrival of the judges to The Mirror.
"Yes I can confirm that the judges for The High Court in Masvingo have started work. As we speak they are already on the ground, inspecting their chambers together with the High Court Registrar Faith Mushure," said Chikwana.
Justice Mafusire and Justice Mawadze were nominated in August to operate full time in Masvingo when the third session of the High Court begins on September 12.
The two were based at the Harare High Court.
Although Chikwana could not shed light on the issue of accommodation, The Mirror is reliably informed that the Judges turned down some houses found for them because they also did not go along with their status.
They will stay at the hotel until suitable accommodation has been found for them.
The High Court in Masvingo was officially opened by Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa who is also in charge of the Ministry of Justice and Parliamentary Affairs in May this year and the main objective in decentralising the High Court is to make sure that justice is accessible to all and cheaper.
Before the opening of Masvingo High Court people from Masvingo and Chiredzi had to travel up to 800km to Harare to have their cases heard. Many had to abandon their cases because of the distance and costs.top story news
