    – A teacher at Chaplin High School in Gweru has been dragged to court by his wife who was demanding maintenance of $200 because the former is neglecting their two-year-old child.
Edwin Cheteni appeared at Shurugwi Magistrate's court where his wife Divine Tavarwisa filed the lawsuit.
Tavarwisa told the court that she lived together with Cheteni at Tongogara Business Centre in Shurugwi when the two had their daughter two years ago and by then things were fine as Cheteni cared for his family.
Cheteni was transferred to Chaplin from Tongogara and she stayed behind but that was when her husband became elusive. Cheteni started neglecting his wife and child, he no longer picked calls and became rude.
The applicant therefore pleaded with the courts that she may be paid $200 for rents, food and clothes for the child.
Cheteni disputed the claim and said that he was a very caring father who loved his daughter and he never stopped caring for her. He also said he was a Government employee whose earnings were little.
He offered to pay $50. Magistrate Evin Matura however ruled that Cheteni had a responsibility to take care of his daughter and the mother so he will pay $80 per month.
