    Team Masvingo wins first ever youth games gold


    Team Masvingo has broken the Zimbabwe Youth Games jinx after winning the Youth Games annual sports tournament for the first time since its inception in 2002.
    Masvingo scooped the overall award after getting 12 gold, 6 silver and 7 bronze medals in the recently ended youth games that were hosted by Mashonaland West.
    Harare metropolitan province was on second position with 12 gold, 4 silver and 7 bronze medals with Mashonaland west on third position having a total of 9 gold, 11 silver and 14 bronze medals.
    The team comprised of 144 students who were selected from the high schools in Masvingo province to participate in the 14th edition of the youth games.
    Team Masvingo scooped gold in the boy's handball, 5 gold medals in boxing and 6 in athletics.
    Athletics contributed most of the medals, racking in 6 gold, 3 silver and 6 bronze medals with the some of the athletes namely Vimbiso Majoni, Kundai Maguranyanga, Tapiwa Chimeka and Hardlife Machira being selected to be part of the Zimbabwean athletics delegation that will represent the country in Angola.
    The boxing team which was under the guidance of Felistus Chinezhira Dumbu scooped 5 gold medals which could not be matched by any province as Bulawayo was on second position with only 1 gold medal.
    The boxing team also had 5 of its members namely Adelight Makaure, Tinashe Majoni, Stephen Chadapwisa, Freeman Mabvongodze and Tsitsi Ndlovu selected as part of the boxing delegation that will represent the country in Angola at the Youth games.
    The handball team beat Harare Metropolitan province 19-18 in the final with Kelvin Munemo giving Masvingo the home run after the teams had had a stalemate at 18 points, in the group stages team Masvingo beat Mashonaland Central 27-15.
    "We are greatly humbled and honored by the performance and skill that our team showed, it's a great victory for Masvingo province," said Masvingo Provincial Education Director Zedius Chitiga.
    A total of 34 students from the Masvingo team were selected to be part of the Zimbabwean delegation that will be representing the country in the Southern Africa Youth Games that will be held in Angola.
    "We are happy with the win, it is our first time bagging such a prestigious award," said Fredrick Matavikwa who is the Provincial Education Officer for Physical Education and culture.
    Lorraine Ncube was voted as the best sharp shooter in netball while some of the participants as Tsitsi Ndlovu, Prudence Zurumba, Raviro Magomo and Moleen Mukunike walked away with awards in their respective fields.
    The team received overwhelming support from Shuvai Mahofa who is the minister of State for Masvingo Province as she donated $300 towards food and personally welcomed the team back from the games.
    Next year's edition of the youth games will be hosted by Matebeleland North.sport news
