    CHIREDZI –
Chiredzi Town Council has four months' salary arrears for its workers, according to information in the hands of The Mirror.
The council coffers are getting deeper into the red as ratepayers owe the local authority over $4000 000 in rates and other services.
Town Secretary Charles Muchatukwa said revenue inflows for the month of June shows that council managed to collect fifty percent of the budgeted collection for the month, which he says shows a slight increase as compared to previous collections.
He said council is owed $4,645 078 by ratepayers in rates, water and sewer charges as well as other services while council`s credits of salaries and statutory obligations to ZIMRA and NSSA stands at $3 516 776. He attributed the dip in revenue collection to late approval of the 2016 budget by the Ministry of Local Government and urged residents to start paying their rates in-order for council to deliver services.
"We are failing to close the gap of our wage arrears to our staff as our revenue coffers are not sufficient. We owe our workers 4 months` salary but with the approval of our 2016 budget I think things will improve. We are owed $4,645 078 by ratepayers. Companies operating in our area are also failing to pay rates, water and sewer and other services.
"We also have a $3 516 776 credit which is salaries, statutory obligations and Tongaat Hullet. For the month of June of the expected $493 864 we managed to collect $233 647 which is 50 percent and that is better as compared to previous months. We therefore encourage residents and all ratepayers to start paying their rates according to the approved budget. We have capital projects which we budgeted for which we must accomplish to improve service delivery in the town" said Muchatukwa.
Muchatukwa said council is putting in place incentives to encourage rate payers to clear their bills as well as debt collection through courts.
