    Mutendi High wins at Gokomere Chess Festival


    - Mutendi High School was the toast of a Chess Festival held at Gokomore recently after it won gold in the girl's category.
    The tournament attracted 14 schools with schools like Bradley High School coming from as far as Bindura and Zengeza 1 High School from Harare.
    A total of 172 players were put into groups of four and there were 23 and 20 groups for the boys and girls respectively. Every player had 30 minutes of game play for every round and the tournament had 5 rounds for every player.
    In the individual category, the first board was won by Kudakwashe Zimbuwa of Zengeza 1 High School whilst Kudzai Mhandu, a form two pupil at Gokomere High School who is set to represent the country in Zambia in August at the Africa Chess Championships won board 2 of the boys' category with a perfect score of all 5 games.
    Board 3 was won by Hebert Mhlanga of Bradley High School whilst board four was swept away by Theophilus Setete of Gutu High School.
    In the girls category Edith Guru of Bradley High School was crowned winner of  board one whilst Tanaka Pawandipa of Mutendi High School won the second board with Tapiwa Mutema of Gokomere High School winning the third board, Ndomupeiishe Mupengo won the fourth board with a perfect score.
    Mutendi High School was crowned the best school in the girl's category with 9 points followed by Gutu and Mukaro High Schools who were tied at 8 points whilst in the boys' category Zengesa High came first with 10 points whilst Gokomere High School followed with 8 points, Gutu and Bradley High Schools were tied on position 3 as they both had 6 points.education news
