Hundreds dejected as Grace fails to attend Chikomba rally

    – Hundreds of people gathered at Neshangwe High School at Sadza Growth Point in Mash East were visibly dejected when the expected guest of honour Grace Mugabe failed to turn up for the event.
The women were at the Growth Point to commemorate International Women's Day.
The women lined up the road to wave the First Lady as the motorcade arrived soon after 2pm on Saturday but joyous smiles turned into dejection as it turned out the guest was not Mugabe.
"Is that her or is she still coming?" people could be heard asking each other from the crowd as Deputy Secretary for Women's Affairs, Eunice Sandi Moyo who came to represent her made it out of the VIP motorcade.
Although Chikomba is Mugabe's home district, it is not clear why people were so keen on having the First Lady.
One source said it was because of the importance of her office as the First Lady. Another source said it was because a lot of goodies have been splashed wherever the First Lady met people at rallies and there were high expectations that those attending the rally were going to get food donations from her.
Goromonzi West MP Beatrice Nyamupinga who is also the acting chairlady for Mashonaland East Province was one of the main speakers at the commemorations.
She said importation of goods including agricultural products was frustrating agricultural activities in the country. She said women were finding no markets for their agricultural products because these were considered inferior compared to products that were coming mainly from South Africa.
"Most women who are into agriculture face challenges in selling their crops as they are regarded as of poor quality compared to foreign products. Women's drawbacks should also be taken into consideration as they constitute 52 percent of the population which contributes in the winning of elections," she said.
The commemorations were attended by senior members of the Politburo and Government.
Sandi Moyo applauded the Ministry of Women Affairs, Gender and Community Development for dedicating a day for celebrating women's achievements and their aspirations.
"I thank the Ministry of Women Affairs for according women a day to celebrate their achievements and aspirations. On the day of celebrations, we also reflect on the challenges that they face as they contribute to the development of the nation," she said.
