    Gokomere High dominates Catholic Ball Games

    •    Mutero walks away with the soccer trophy


    - Gokomere High School has retained the Bishop's floating trophy after dominating the Catholic Diocese of Masvingo Secondary Schools Ball Games with seven gold medals out of 12 sporting disciplines.
    A total of 20 schools participated in the games which took place at Mukaro Mission in Gutu over the weekend. Some of the games where competitions took place are  basketball, tennis, chess, volleyball, handball, netball and soccer games.
    The ball games had no age restrictions as all students were allowed to participate despite their age differences. The top four positions were taken by Gokomere High School with seven gold medals, two silver medals and one bronze medal, followed by Mutero High School with one gold medal, three silver medals and three bronze medals, on position three was Silveira High School with one gold medal, two silver medals and four bronze medals whilst the host, Mukaro High School took the fourth position after securing one gold medal and two bronze medals.
    In the boy's category, Gokomere scooped gold in volleyball, basketball, handball and chess as the girls dominated tennis, netball and chess and managed a total of seven gold medals.
    Mutero High School won the soccer trophy after winning 4-3 against Gokomere High on penalty shootouts whilst Mukaro High won the girls handball competition, Silveira High won the boy's tennis category to clinch gold whilst bitter rivals St Anthony's High won the girl's basketball division with Makambe High beating Mukaro High 2 to 1 sets in the final game to scoop gold in the girls volleyball games.
    The tournament was sponsored by Delta beverages, HEMPAC, PEMIVAG, Shalom distributors, sky chemicals, Base suppliers, Cruise perfect, Etteled Electricals, ZCCU, Nyaradzo and Masvingo Diocese.
    Chairman of the Catholic Diocese of Masvingo Games, Aquanos Mazhunda complimented the students for their participation and is hopeful that the teams which lost will bounce back next year.
    The games ran under the theme Education, sport and environmental care in the year of mercy.
