    BEITBRIDGE
    - A married 27-year-old taxi driver who impregnated a minor aged 15 has been sent to jail for three years by a Beitbridge court.
He will however, serve an effective two-and-half years. Jonathan Mapololo of Lutumba Village near the border town who early on Monday "innocently" presented himself to Police was stunned as the reality of imprisonment unfolded.
"I paid lobola for this girl and slept in a booking room with her only once. I was living with her as my wife after that," Mapololo said in mitigation to the court presided over by resident magistrate Gloria Takundwa.
"I proposed love to her and later checked her in. I then arranged to marry and I paid $500 of the bride price and am left with a balance of $3 000," he told an unimpressed court.
The State led by Nomathemba Sayi had earlier told the court that sometime last year Mapololo aged 27 booked the minor in a booking house at Lutumba where she consented to sex.
This happened a further two times until the parents of the child, who were in South Africa and were not aware of the marriage, reported the matter to the Police.
In mitigation Mapololo escorted to court by his wife, father and mother begged the court to be lenient with him because he had paid a bride price.
Magistrate Takundwa suspended six of the 36 months term for five years during which Mapololo should not be found engaging in sexual activities with under-age girls.crime news
