    On the move...Dr Jinya appointed BAZ president

    NEDBANK MBCA Bank Managing Director Dr Charity Jinya has been appointed Bankers Association of Zimbabwe (BAZ) president.
    Dr Jinya took over as BAZ president on April 23 this year after serving as vice president to Sam Malaba since 2010.
    Malaba is Agribank Managing Director Dr Jinya will be deputised by Webster Rusere who is FBC bank managing director. The post of president is held for two years after which the incumbent's deputy takes over.
    Dr Jinya becomes the second woman in the history of BAZ to hold such a position after former Stanbic managing director and current regional managing and executive director of Standard Chartered Bank Namibia Pindie Nyandoro.
    BAZ was established in 1992 to provide a forum on matters of common interest in the banking industry. The association comprises banks registered and authorised to conduct banking services in the country.
    Among other functions BAZ provides policy recommendations to the relevant authorities, establishes a code of conduct for the banking industry and act as a medium of communication with Government, the Reserve Bank and the general public.
    Dr Jinya started her career at the then Ministry of Economic Planning and Development soon after independence as a research economist with the United Nations Development agency.
    She moved on to join the Chamber of Commerce which later changed its name to Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce (ZNCC) and was the first black female economist involved in policy recommendations to the Government before moving to Manica as its research officer in the department of travel and tourism.
    Her banking career started in 1989 when she joined ZB bank then known as ZimBank as a senior manager. She rose through the ranks to become an executive director before joining Barclays Bank Zimbabwe Ltd as the chief operating officer and subsequently its managing director in 2004.
    In 2008 Dr Jinya was appointed managing director of Barclays Bank Ltd Uganda until 2010 when she joined MBCA as its first female MD in its 54-year history.
    MBCA has branches in Zvishavane, Gweru, Kwekwe, Mutare, Harare and Bulawayo.
    Dr Jinya holds a B.A. Honors degree in Economics from Sunderland, UK, is a fellow of the Institute of Bankers Zimbabwe and an honorary Doctorate in Business Administration by St Linus University in 2011.
    She has also studied at various institutions including Chicago Business school, London Business school and Harvard University. She is also an inspirational speaker.
    She is a recipient a number of awards like 2012 and 2011 ZNCC First Runner up Business Woman of the year. 2012 and 2013 Megafest top 20 business personalities in Zimbabwe.
    She served on a number of boards among them ARDA, ZimSun, Junior Achievement Zimbabwe, Christian Care and Waddilove and Sandringam schools.
    Dr Jinya is married and has two sons and a grandson.
