    Mashava officer-in-charge spurns $5 bribe

    – A Harare bound bus driver has been fined $200 after Mashava Officer-in-Charge Lodwina Chaibva spurned his attempts to bribe her for a traffic offence with $5.
Resident Magistrate Bishard Chineka slapped Kudakwashe Mapfumo (40) with a US$200 fine after he attempted to bribe Chaibva last Friday morning.
Angeline Mujakachi representing the State told the court that Mapfumo who is employed as a bus driver by Sheron Transport Company was stopped at a road block in Mashava and asked to produce a route permit by Chaibva.
Mapfumo who was enroute to Harare from Beitbridge failed to produce the required documents but instead gave Chaibva a US$5 note enclosed in a Police receipt citing that he had no permit leading to his arrest. In his ruling Chineka said that corruption was cancerous and must be stopped and hailed Chaibva for standing up to the rot.
Mapfumo pleaded that he be spared jail as he was enroute to Harare with passengers. He had just diverted to Mashava to drop off a passenger.
Chaibva recently appeared in court accused of taking a $70 bribe from a traditional healer alleged to have been driving without a licence.
A Masvingo Magistrate dismissed the case concluding that the case was badly investigated.crime news
