Zanu PF wins Chiredzi council by-election

    – Zanu PF candidate, Blessings Mazinyane has won the Chiredzi Urban Council Ward 5 by-election held last weekend.
Mazinyane beat six other contesting candidates by a wide margin in an election marred by voter apathy and a boycott by the main opposition party MDC-T.
The opposition also complained against vote buying after the ward received 14 tonnes of maize from Zanu PF purpoted to be drought relief at the time of the campaign.
Mazinyane polled 685 votes against Gabriel Chebundo (Independent)'s 32, Gasel Machingambi (Independent) 29, Patrick Madzura (Independent) 14, Mapfumo Matema (Independent) 8 and Masikati Mashatini (NCA) 11.
Chiredzi District Elections Officer Hendrina Mukuvare said that there were 6 spoiled votes and percentage poll was 23,08%.
The seat fell vacant after an MDC-T councillor was jailed for theft.
The elections were also unique in that the Zimbabwe Electoral Elections (ZEC) was undertaking a pilot project to test the new voting system which the electoral body recently adopted.
In a bid to end double voting, marker pens with ineradicable ink were used to mark voters.
"With the results which I have announced I declare Blessings Mazinyani duly elected councillor for Chiredzi Urban ward 5. There were 6 spoiled votes and the percentage poll was 23,08%" said Mukuvare.
MDC-T did not field any candidate since it is still implementing its boycott of elections while still demanding electoral reforms but the poor turnout in the ward predominantly occupied by MDC-T supporters gave a clear indication that there will be stiff competition in 2018.local news
