    Team GZU ready for Cluster 1 Zusa games





    MASVINGO
    - Great Zimbabwe University team for the Zimbabwe Universities Sports Association (Zusa Cluster 1) games are ready for the competitions and have promised to bring the trophy home from Gweru where the games will be held.
     The GZU sports officer Percy Ngwenya said this in an interview with The Mirror at the institution's premises where the team is camped in preparation for the Zusa Cluster 1 competitions which start today in Gweru until April 3.
    "The morale in the camp is very high and if our preparations are anything to go by there is no doubt the team has improved tremendously from the previous year, all teams have international students especially the soccer team which has a fusion of good Congolese players will most likely clinch gold.
    "We also expect gold medals from the likes of Michael Nkudhlande a sprinter, Sekai Rwodzi in 800m, Clara Nyamangondo 400m, Lesley Chibharo and Mtulisi Phiri," said Ngwenya who was oozing with confidence.
    He said a total of 189 athletes will represent the university with those involved in track events heading to Bulawayo's White City stadium for track competitions on March 31 before joining the rest of the team in Gweru.
    Ngwenya also said the team has 21 students from among the athletes who have been trained on first aid and one fulltime nurse.
     When The Mirror visited the training grounds at the institution's campus it was a hive of activity as various teams from different sporting disciplines were putting final touches on their preparations.
    "We have not won anything since we started participating in the Zusa games but this time around we will bring at least a bronze medal," said Sithabiso Mpofu the umpire coach for the GZU netball team while taking the team through their paces.
    Last year team GZU was number 4 they managed gold in women darts and bronze in rugby among other notable achievements.
    The defending champions is the University of Zimbabwe who hosted the event. Cluster 1 comprise the traditional games like soccer, netball, karate, volleyball, athletics, basketball, rugby, golf.sport news
