    - Newly formed rugby team Ancient City Chiefs has been formally launched and is now eligible to play in the national league when the season begins this year.
The club was launched by Masvingo Mayor Hubert Fidze at a ceremony held at Paibwe Restaurant in the city centre last Saturday where tens of rugby enthusiasts, Zimbabwe Rugby Union officials and players converged to witness the event. The club was established in October last year and is the only outfit from Masvingo.
"We are happy with the club, hopefully they will go all the way to the top, we are also hoping to co-ordinate with them and introduce rugby in primary schools," remarked Tinashe Shamu who is the Rugby Trust Zimbabwe manager.
Masvingo Mayor, Hubert Fidze also embraced the club formation and promised the Chiefs a training ground and support.
"Masvingo is great and there is a lot of talent, this is an initiative that everyone should embrace from grass roots as it also helps in curbing drug abuse (catch them young)" said Fidze.
The club has big names including Charles Jiji and Farai Jijita who have represented the country before.
Tinashe Kandiyero the club's president wants the club to be self-sufficient despite the current economic challenges the country is facing.
"We are not worried about the economic situation, we simply want to be the best," he said.
Admire Nyamaziwa the club's captain and Zimbabwe's Mr Fitness runner up appealed for help for players to improve their welfare.
"We want the players to play the game but at the same time we want them to be provided with jobs so they cater for themselves," he said.sport news
