Muchena, new ZIFA Eastern Region boss

    - Soft spoken Davison Muchena romped to an easy victory on Sunday to land the post of chairman ZIFA Eastern Region which was left vacant after Piraishe Mabhena was elected board member for the national association in December last year.
The elections which were held at Chevron Hotel saw Muchena garnering 17 votes against Mutare prominent lawyer and recently relegated Buffaloes committee member Ashel Mutungura's 8 with 2 spoilt votes.
At the same meeting Nabioth Magwizi was formerly confirmed as the substantive chairman for Masvingo province by the presiding officer Elizabeth Banda after he was elected unopposed earlier on.
Muchena who has been a finance board member since 2009 thanked the electorate for showing faith in him to lead the region until 2018 when the next elections will be held and also promised to source sponsorship for the league. "The first priority we would like to address even though it is difficult is the issue of sponsorship for the league," said Muchena soon after being elected. Eastern Region Division One League has been without sponsorship for quite a long time due to poor management and economic hardships prevailing in the country.
Muchena who is senior buyer at the sugar giant Tongaat Hulets said he will reveal more programs at the next annual general meeting to be held soon where a committee will be set to determine late appearances penalties among other issues.
He also bemoaned lack of development of the game at grassroots level and misuse of grants from FIFA meant for lower divisions.
"People are passionate about football but how can we develop the kids without adequate kits. If it means taking this issue to Zifa President Chiyangwa then we have to do that because we get these grants annually but we do not see how this money is used," said Muchena.
"We are to engage in Zonal competitions in remote districts so as to promote development of the game in such areas. These teams will be provided with soccer balls and boots so that they can be able to train to become quality football players," added Muchena.
Magwizi and Muchena promised to work closely with the National Association of Secondary Heads (NASH) for development of soccer at grassroots level as funding is almost guaranteed by their parents and guardians during the school days.
Meanwhile, Muchena also announced that the case between Masvingo Utd FC and Mutare City Rovers was over as the later failed to pay complaints fee of $4000 for their case to be heard by the ZIFA Disciplinary Committee. This automatically means City Rovers are the Eastern Region Division One 2015 champions. He added that the court case was also solved amicably and no action was taken against Masvingo Utd FC.
Tedius Machawira the Eastern Region administrator, ZIFA Board member Mabhena, acting administrator Masvingo province Tinos Chivasa and all the representatives of the clubs in the region attended the meeting.sport news
