    - Two of Masvingo's schools provincial athletics teams, the one for primary and the other for secondary schools left Masvingo on Tuesday and Wednesday respectively to fulfil their itinerary  in the national competitions.
Both teams had between 50 and 60 athletes. The primary schools' team is under the National Association of Primary School Heads while the secondary schools team is under the National Association of Secondary School Heads.
The primary schools team which was camped at Gokomere is going for the competitions that will be held at Torwood Stadium in Kwekwe while the Secondary Schools team which was camped at Vic High will be in Mutare. All the competitions will end this Friday.
Both teams were sent off by the provincial education director, Zedias Chitiga.
The primary schools team is actually the defending champion and there is strong hope that they may bring back two trophies, one for the athletes and the other for their physical education team whose pre-competition performance has been highly rated.
NASH Masvingo provincial chairman Edward Mashiri promised The Mirror that the NASH Trophy was coming to Masvingo this year during an interview just before they left.
"We are going to be crowned the national champions in Mutare as our team is well prepared for the athletics championships with the support of all stakeholders that is the PED, team trainers and the athletes," said Mashiri.
Last year team Masvingo won bronze medal overall with 17 gold, 13 silver and 14 bronze medals.
This year's team comprise outstanding international athletes like Tawanda Tembo, Kundai Maguranyanga, Vimbiso Majoni, Nyasha Vhudzi, Raviro Magomo and Catherine Toringa.
Teacher In-Charge of athletics Sinos Mugura was oozing with confidence and said that his team is going to improve in this year's competitions following the training done during camping days.
"All is well with our team, I am impressed by the performance displayed by our athletes, we are very sure that we are going to scoop more gold medals at national level. Our preparations were better than last year, we had camping for our pupils and our coaches are highly qualified so a win for us is fair," said Mugura.
Mugura also added that, team Masvingo has the highest number of athletes who have been representing Zimbabwe in Confederation of Southern African Schools Association (COSASA) competitions.
"There are some athletes in camp who are record-breakers , pupils like  Nyasha Vhudzi who at one time won gold in Spain in the 800m race, the duo of Raviro Magomo and Cathrine Toringa who will represent Zimbabwe in Cameroon in April, and Kundai Maguranyanga COSASA winner last year in 400m race," said Mugura.local news
