Lutheran Church to establish mission school in Chiredzi

    – Chiredzi which is the only district in Masvingo Province without a mission school will have one by next school term following a ground breaking ceremony in Chikombedzi by the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Zimbabwe (ELCZ) last week.
One of the reasons for the establishment of the mission is the abuse of children some of whom are raped as they walk 16km to school. The name of the mission school is Gurungweni ELC2 Mission School.
ELCZ Presiding Bishop, Chemist Faindi said his church was going to build a mission school and hospital in line with their biblical mandate to go teach and preach the bible. A budget of $150 000 has already been set aside for the construction of four classroom blocks in the school.
The Member of Parliament for Chiredzi Rtd Gen Kalisto Gwanetsa donated a tonne of cement, $200 and released a tractor to help with work on the construction site. He made the donations during the ground breaking ceremony.
ELCZ is one of the largest missionaries in the country with 13 schools including Chegato, Musume, Masase, Mnene, Zezani and Manama.
Bishop Faindi said his organisation was pushed into establishing the mission after realising the high number of child abuse cases in Chikombedzi. He also said that there was a high rate of child labour cases and all these can be attributed to lack of education among the people in the community.
He also noted that there were no mission or boarding schools in the area, a situation that has seen pupils walking long distances to the nearest school hence a high rate of school dropout in Chikombedzi.
"We are missionaries and we have noted the lack of a secondary school nearby. We are just responding to calls of the community and we are going to build a mission school, a hospital and a church.
"Our biblical mandate is go preach and teach the Bible so a holistic approach which we have is to see a child grow physically and mentally. Work should start immediately and there should be structures by April this year," said Bishop Faindi.
The project is being spearheaded by the women`s section of ELCZ led by Reverend Elita Moyo who is the Gender Justice Coordinator in the church.
Reverend Moyo said as mothers they were touched by the plight of children in the area with some of them going for form one as late as at the age of 15.
"The school is already established and its enrolment is 39 form one pupils and they are using Gurungweni Primary School. Pupils here drop out of school after grade 7 since they cannot afford to walk long distances of about 16km to nearest secondary schools. Children are raped while travelling those distances. Our first block should be complete by end of second term" said Reverend Moyo.
Rtd Gen Gwanetsa thanked ELCZ for assisting Chikombedzi people saying it was good to see a church complementing government`s efforts as enshrined in ZIMASSET.
"This is a good gesture by the Lutheran and it complements government`s efforts of providing education to the people. This area has high a high number of child marriages, child labour and child abuse in the form of rape. There is also high rate of children crossing to South Africa and this will go a long way in reducing these cases of child abuse.
"I urge parents in this area to support ELCZ and provide labour for the project to be successful" said Gwanetsa.
The Judiciary Service Commission established a regional court in Chiredzi this year after realising high cases of child rape in the district. education news
