Gov stops grants towards family planning programmes

    – Government has since stopped payment of health service capital grants towards the Zimbabwe National Family Planning Council (ZNFPC) thereby severely crippling reproductive health programmes, a senior official has said.
The situation is so bad that the whole of Masvingo Province is being serviced by one vehicle for its ZNFPC programmes.
ZNFPC Provincial Manager for Masvingo, Peter Vhoko told The Mirror in an interview that ZNFPC is as a result now relying on sporadic capital injections from western funding partners for its programmes.
ZNFPC is a parastatal under Ministry of Health and Child Welfare whose functional role is to disseminate information on reproductive health, distribute contraceptives, as well as to conduct counselling programmes in the society.
"The situation is very bad. The current harsh economic conditions have forced our Government to abandon its traditional capital grant meant for reproductive health in the country," Vhoko said.
He, however, applauded Government for approval of salaries for ZNFPC staff through the Treasury despite the adverse effects of the ailing economy.
"Again as ZNFPC we view the fact that Government is allowing western partners to chip into our programmes as being quite commendable. Otherwise the situation could have been worse than ever," Vhoko added.
"In Masvingo, the province is being serviced by only one vehicle, while four other vehicles are down. Our Community Based Distributors (CBDs) of contraceptives are also having a tough time as they use old bicycles previously donated by Western funding partners to get to remote areas," said Vhoko.health news
