    CHIREDZI
      -  The Zimbabwe Sugarcane Development Association (ZSDA)chairman Edmore Veterai has  said that his organisation has plans to extent sugarcane farming to other districts and in particular Chivi.
He said this when he addressed farmers at the ZSDA  annual general meeting held at Mukwasine  Country Club on Friday last week.
He said this project is mooted under organisation's blue print titled "The Sugar Industry Vision 2015". He said ZSDA plans  to expand sugarcane growing to Chivi and Bikita and new dams will also be buold in those areas.
He urged farmers to adopt modern irrigation methods or building return dams in-order to serve water.
"In our blue-print our plans are to expand sugarcane farming to other districts like Bikita and Chivi and we are also looking for funding for us to build Mkwasine, Mujiche, Mukazi and Runde Tende dams.  Let us embrace morden farming methods like drip irrigation and centre pivots. Let us build return dams to capture and return water leaving the fields.
"Existing water in dams though low, if well managed and boosted, use of regenerated water and borehole water will give the Lowveld farmer a competitive edge and keep the sugar industry afloat. Farmers are business people who must be very responsible and fully appreciate the balance sheet. If managed well and if farmers embrace new irrigation methods the current low dam levels may get us to March 2017 and currently we have started employing methods which serve water" said Veterai. local news
