    Catholic bishops gather to celebrate Pope’s 3rd anniversary


    - Thousands of Catholics from all over the country converged at St Theresa Cathedral in Gweru last Sunday to celebrate Pope Francis' third anniversary as the head of the World's biggest church.
    The Pope's representative in Zimbabwe Archbishop Marek Zalewski was the guest of honour.
    Six bishops from the country's eight dioceses were represented at the celebrations.
    Bishop Xavier Munyongani from Gweru, Bishop Albert Serrano from Hwange, Bishop Michael Bhasera from Masvingo, Archbishop Alex Thomas from Bulawayo, Bishop  Angel Floro from Gokwe, Bishop Alexio Muchabaiwa from Mutare and Bishop Emeritus of Gweru Diocese, Martin Munyanyi.
    The event is held annually and a venue is chosen for all Catholics in Zimbabwe to celebrate the anniversary.
    Pope Francis is a Jesuit from Argentina and he was born in Buenos Aires in 1936 as Jorge Mario Bergoglio. He was elected Pope Francis in 2013 becoming 266th Pope of the Roman Catholic Church.
    He is the first Pope from the Americas and he took his papal title after St. Francis of Assisi of Italy.
    Zalewski told the congregation during his sermon that the Pope has sent him to encourage members to remain strong in faith.
    "Stay strong, love your God and do not sin," said Nuncio Zalewski.
    Fr. Henry Mutodzaniso from St. Paul's  Parish in Mkoba told The Mirror in an interview that they were very excited to be gathered to celebrate the third anniversary of their Pope.
