    – MDC T president Morgan Tsvangirai has bemoaned salaries at Tongaaat Hullet which he described as low compared to what the company gives to other workers in the region.
He however, blamed the situation on the politicisation of the business and the trade unions by politicians from Zanu PF.
Tsvangirai said this when he addressed thousands of supporters at Tshovani Stadium in Chiredzi on Sunday. He accused ZANU PF of having influenced the formation of the Zimbabwe Sugar Milling Industry Workers Union (ZISMIWU) so that the organisation could in the end serve the interest of the party.
Tsvangirai who himself is a revered former trade unionist said it was criminal for Tongaat Hullet to pay workers $170 which he described as a slave wage. He also said it was inconceivable that Tongaat was paying salaries that are lower than what the company is paying to workers in other countries in the region.
"The first thing is the issue of workers, since this is a working community. Tongaat Hullet workers are being paid $170 and the problem is that workers unions should not be political and Admore Hwarare formed ZISMIWU with ZANU PF influence. A workers' union should be there to advance the interests of workers and not politicians as we see at Tongaat Hullet today.
"If a union sides with employers we call it yellow union and it is criminal in Zimbabwe for Tongaat Hullet to pay such meagre salaries while it is paying more on some of its estates in the region. I am very touched by this sorrowful exploitation of workers which is happening here and ZANU PF keeps quite on this issue," said Tsvangirai.
Tsvangira`s came comments soon after a job action by the company's 17 000 failed to force a salary increase.
ZISMIWU has a record of funding ZANU PF leaders as well as programs making it a darling for politicians.news
