NGUNDU - A mentally challenged man desperate to get a lift from Ngundu to Triangle blocked the highway with two big boulders and an iron bar in a bid to stop vehicles that were passingby without taking notice of his flagging down.
Shepherd Poterai (29) who had failed to get medication to control his mental illness at Masvingo General Hospital came back home to Triangle in a worse situation and decided to physically stop cars along Ngundu – Tanganda Highway in order to get a lift.
He placed the boulders on the road and the first vehicle to approach was a Sprinter commuter bus. The driver stopped and bewildered passengers disembarked to find out what was going on.
Poterai who feared physical confrontation from the confused passengers then picked up the iron bar and smashed the windscreen of the bus before running away into the bushes.
Poterai appeared before Magistrate Bishard Chineka who ordered the accused to see a doctor after realizing that he was mentally unstable.
Angeline Mujakachi representing the State told the court that on February 3, 2016 around 12pm and 2km from Ngundu Business Centre along Ngundu-Chiredzi road, the bus driver (Forbes Samakomva) saw two big stones on both sides of the road an iron bar lying between the stones blocking the road, he stopped the bus then he saw Poterai rushing towards the bus holding an iron bar and struck the bus on wind screen.
The total damage was US$950. news
