Beitbridge Police nab car thieves in the act

    Beitbridge Bureau

Plain clothes policemen at Beitbridge on Tuesday nabbed three suspected cross-border car thieves and foiled a theft of three vehicles whose estimated value is about $40 000  in a sleek operation fit only for the movies.
Matabeleland South Police spokesman Thabani Mkwananzi referred all questions to his head office in Harare saying if it was a cross-border activity his head office was better placed to respond.
An eye-witness who is also a border official said the Police details who, from their dressing, could have passed for any other border tout, positioned themselves close to each of the three vehicles namely a Toyota Fortuner, a Land-Rover Discovery and an executive Mercedes Benz C 200 CDI that had been parked far apart from each other inside the border post.
Operating in unison in what must have been a tip-off, the Police simultaneously swooped on the unsuspecting gang members who had managed to enter through the more sophisticated South African border post that is alive with cameras and on-line technologies.
Police surprised the suspects as they returned from surveying in the Immigration and Customs halls and they were ordered down in full view of other travelers who were treated to a free live Police and thieves movie.
"The cops suddenly switched into a serious mode and became tough handcuffing the suspects who were taken by surprise. Kief Sutherland who plays as secret agent Jack Bauer in the 24 Movie series could have been green with envy from the action of the Police," said the border official.
The cops bundled the suspects into one of the vehicles and drove them to the Police station leaving the crowd mesmerized by the swift reaction of the Police.
