Gutu RDC engineer’s wife sent to prison over kidnap

    Mirror Reporter

GUTU – The case where the wife of Gutu Rural District Council engineer Karen Shenjere and her friend Mercy Mashava are accused of kidnapping and severely assaulting Vaida Chiripanyanga, a Harare nurse has been referred to the High Court as has always been indicated by The Mirror.
Shenjere and Mashava who were initially released on free bail by Gutu Magistrate Edwin Marecha were on Friday locked up in prison by the same magistrate and told to appear at the High Court on February 5, 2016 for the start of their case.
Karen Shenjere ganged up with Mashava to kidnap Chiripanyanga after accusing her of being a girlfriend to Engineer Vambai Shenjere who is Karen's husband.
The Magistrate did not give the reason for his about turn when hundreds of people who had turned up for the case expected to hear his ruling after the State had closed its case.
However, the sudden turn of events could be because of a scathing complaint made by Chiripanyanga against the magistrate and the prosecutor Millicent Azangwe who she both accused of bias in favour of the two accused. The complaints were made to Chief Magistrate, Mishrod Guvamombe and the National Director of Prosecutions Florence Ziyambi.
She also said that the case was a serious one which could only be heard by a High Court Judge and not a magistrate.
Gutu Magistrate Court witnessed one of the biggest turnouts with many people failing to find places to sit in the small court room as the kidnap case drew immense interest from the community of the just declared town of Mpandawana.
Magistrate Marecha kept people waiting as he only heard the case after 2pm.
He came into the courtroom and in one terse sentence said in a low voice that the case will be heard at the High Court and the two accused were therefore being remanded in prison. He then adjourned the court before the interpreter could repeat what he had said in Shona.
Many people at the back appeared not to have heard what the magistrate had said but when word spread outside from those that were sitting in the front, there was jubilation over the new court stance.
The two accused dropped their heads in surprise and almost shame as their temporary freedom was taken away. They were whisked away by the guards.
Engineer Shenjere who has been accompanying his wife to court immediately drove away after the adjournment. news
