Chiredzi – Zanu PF youth Blessings Mazinyani has romped to victory in party primaries that were marred in controversy.
The primaries held last Saturday were to choose a candidate that will represent the party in the Chiredzi Urban Ward 5 by-election to be held in April this year.
The internal party polls were marred by allegations of vote buying and disregard of the party constitution as losing candidates alleged that most people who voted were not from party structures.
Mazinyani beat five other candidates to win the party ticket. The elections are to replace jailed MDC-T councillor Munyaradzi Hatinahama.
Losing candidates have since written a complaint to National Political Commissar Saviour Kasukuwere.
The elections which were witnessed by The Mirror were presided over by Masvingo Provincial Political Commissar Jeppy Jaboon under a tree in Ward 5 and no clear electoral college was used. Ballot papers were given to people according to branches but no proper vetting was used and people from other parties managed to vote.
Mazinyani got 154 votes and his nearest challenger Jonathan Shonhiwa got 109 votes. Loyd Simango 47 votes, Leonard Ngwenya got 18 votes, Reason Dube 9 and Kenneth Javangwe 5 votes. news
