Bishop Bhasera celebrates Christmas with youth

    Shingirirai Chinondo

    – The head of Masvingo Roman Catholic Diocese, Bishop Michael Dickson Bhasera has held a get together Christmas party for the youth from St Peter and Paul Parish in Masvingo Urban.
It was a day to remember for  more than 50 youths who entered the gates to Bishop Bhasera's residence known as Bishop's House in Clovelly Suburb in Masvingo at 2pm last Saturday and enjoyed food, games and brief speeches and introductions with the Bishop.
The party which is the first of its kind lasted until around 6pm.
The programme started with the youth sitting in an open space outside the boardroom and the youth were sitting in a circle facing Bishop Bhasera who was at the head of the circle.
Food was provided and then there were self-introductions by each of Bishop Bhasera's visitors ending with him. Also present was Father Rudolf Nyandoro who had come to meet Bishop Bhasera on his 17th Anniversary as a priest. He had no option but to also join the party. Father Emmanuel Zengeya, the Priest- in-Charger at Peter and Paul was also present at the function.
"My name is Michael Dickson Bhasera. My family got the name Bhasera because it was given to my grandfather by his employer, a white farmer who called him Bhasela but because there is no L in Shona people then just called him Bhasera.
"The white farmer called my grandfather Bhasera because my grandfather had been given a token of appreciation (mbasera in Shona) and then this became his name.
"The same white farmer married my grandmother and he is the one who then named me Dickson after," said Bishop Bhasera.
He said he was nominated to be Bishop in 1991 and his nomination was announced to him by telegraph by the Nuncio in Harare and he was given three days to respond but he then asked for five days to think about it. At that time he was vicar general of Gweru Diocese. He had to keep his nomination a secret until it was announced by the Pope," said Bishop Bhasera.
After the introductions the youth then went for games that were attended by Bishop Bhasera who clapped hands and encouraged the competitors.
Bishop Bhasera and the youth executive then cut three Christmas cakes that were shared by the youth.
The youth also had time for braai.
Bishop Bhasera urged the youth to continue with such events which strengthened their communication and relationship with the Bishop.
"I am so happy; this is the first time in this diocese that we have had such an event with the youths  so you are pioneers. What made me happy is that you left all other things you were supposed to be doing and chose to join me here. I want to say to you that you should pray to God telling him all your challenges and he will respond to your prayers," said Bishop Bhasera.news
