ZAKA - A notorious armed robber who terrorised parts of Masvingo Province and also shot at a Police detective thereby injuring him has been sentenced to life in prison by High Court Judge, Justice Joseph Musakwa.
Mashwell Kurauone (33) who faced several serious charges including murder and armed robbery appeared at the High Court Circuit in Masvingo last week.
Kurauone who hails from Chikoho Village, Dekeza area under Chief Bota in Zaka moved around with a pistol hidden in his underpants.
He faced one count of attempted murder in which he shot Innocent Mupoperi, a Chiredzi Detective Sergeant twice on the thigh, three counts of armed robbery, plus one count of murder of a Toyota Ipsum driver.
Kurauone was sentenced last week at a time when he is serving a 33- year jail term for a spate of other armed robbery cases.
Justice Musakwa slapped Kurauone with 30 years for attempted murder and armed robbery.  This makes up a total 63 years in jail.
On top of the 63 year he was also found guilty of shooting Mberi Chibaro, a Toyota Ipsum driver to death.
Justice Musakwa then effectively sentenced him to a life imprisonment with hard labour.
For the State, Takunda Chikwati told the Court that on December 5, 2012 at the 88 km peg, Chekenyere turn-off, Roy area along Chiredzi road, the accused and his colleague who is still at large boarded a Toyota Ipsum that was heading for Masvingo.
Kurauone had a Z88 pistol concealed in his underpants.
Upon arrival at Chekenyere turn-off, the accused ordered the driver to lower the volume of the car radio and stop the vehicle.
The driver, Chibaro complied. It was then that the accused jumped out of the car and shot him once on the back with a pistol.
    Chibaro died on the spot.
The accused shot Chiredzi Detective Sgt. Mupoperi who was aboard the same vehicle twice on the thigh, as he attempted to flee from possible death.
The accused pulled the deceased out of the vehicle onto the tarred road.
Other passengers on the same vehicle lost a total of US$452 and three cell phones to the notorious robbers.
The body of the deceased was recovered by a senior Police officer who was also travelling along the same road.
Kurauone was arrested by Police officers in Chiredzi while taking a siesta on a stationary Mukumba bus, after a bus loader discovered that he had a pistol. news
