MASVINGO – There is a crisis at the Provincial Education Direc- tor (PED)’s offices in Masvingo after the City Council disconnected water over a $30 000 debt and now wants to follow this up with the closure of the place for hygiene purposes. The Mirror visited the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Schools Head office for Masvingo Province and established that workers at Wigley House where the Ministry occupies two floors are walking one kilo- meter to Victoria Junior Primary School to visit toilets.
Provincial Education Director Zedius Chitiga confirmed the issue and said arrangements were being made to clear the debt with council.
“We want water supply to be restored and we are working on that,” said Chitiga.
However, the toilets situation has been dire for the past two weeks. The PED’s offices in Masvingo are the busiest in the province servicing more than 3 000 teachers.
Masvingo City Council acting Town Clerk Edward Mukaratirwa said there was no going back on the matter and unless the Ministry pays immediately, his offices would soon be seeking the closure of the offices over health reasons.
“This is the second week since we closed their water supply over a debt which they incurred since last year. We are considering invoking sections of the Public Health Act and we will have the offices close.
“They cannot continue to use these offices without ablution facilities and water supply. Where are they relieving themselves? More so, what is the situation for their clients and visitors?” asked Mukaratirwa.
Workers at the offices said it was hard to spend 8hours a day in a place where there are no toilets.
