OK Zim brings joy, fun to Ngomahuru

    NKULUMANI MLAMBO

MASVINGO RURAL – OK Zim, the largest supermarket group in Zimbabwe left inmates at Ngomahuru Psychiatric Hospital with a day to remember when staffers spent the day playing games and music with the disadvantaged.
The group also made the biggest donation so far to the institute whose inmates suffer from severe malnutrition, have a serious crisis of sanitary pads for females and the place is run down.
OK national sales manager Florence Ndanga, handed over the donation of 250 undergarments, 100kg rice, 500 packs
of sanitary pads and snacks. She was accompanied at the handover ceremony by OK Masvingo branch manager, Shephered Mahiya and staff members on Sunday.
The OK group arranged themselves into teams that played soccer, snooker, volleyball and netball with the inmates. It was heart rending to see OK staff putting so much joy on the faces of the inmates whose life is all gloomy. Ok staff and inmates also danced to music and there were nimble feet on the dance floor while other inmates hopped about as they got lost in the fun. The staff who arrived at 10am and spent the day mingled with inmates as they talked stories, cracked jokes and laughed. Various donors are responding to the plight
of the 170 inmates after The Mirror revealed the inhuman and degrading environment where female inmates walked with dripping blood because of lack of sanitary pads at the hospital.
The Mirror story which shook the world also revealed critical cases of malnutrition among inmates who are given tea and porridge without sugar because of the dire financial situation. The inmates also get sadza with boiled vegetables beacause the hospital has no cooking oil.
Inmates never had meat with their meals since January this year.
Ngomahuru matron, Thomas Hwami paid tribute to OK Zimbabwe and staff for their generosity. He praised them for spending the whole day at the institution as that enabled them to witness the plight first hand.
“We are very grateful for this donation which has come at a time when the institution is going through a very difficult time. Our problems range from shortages of drugs, food, clothing to infrastructure and we will also be happy if you could attend to those as well,” said Hwami.
He said the perimeter fence is not tall enough and patients escape into the community and when they are apprehended by villagers the institution may not have fuel to attend the scene.
“Some years back we used to give discharged patients travel warrants where they would use public transport and the transporters would be paid by the Government. Now things have changed and we are having challenges in getting bus fare for discharged patients as some relatives can’t afford,” said Hwami who has been with the institution for 24 years.#Masvingo Mirror#
