Masvingo residents lose $95 587 in Bank frauds

MASVINGO – Bank frauds where suspects ask for Personal Identity Numbers (PIN) through messages on the phone are on the increase and several Bank clients from Masvingo have lost $95 587 in the three months from August to October 2019 alone, Acting Provin-cial Police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa has said.
The hardest hit is CABS while Steward bank and FBC have also been targeted. The fraudsters have been using all networks.
Police gathered Press corps at Masvingo Central Police Station on Tuesday and made a plea to the public not to respond to mes-sages from people asking for their PIN numbers either through calls or phone messages.
Shattering, said Dhehwa is the case of Lameck Dhemba from Chigwedere Village under Chief Gutu who received a call in the morning from people claiming to be from CABS headquarters doing systems upgrade.
He released the PIN number and they cleared the account of $25 000.
On the same day Restina Virukai (23) from Masvingo town received the same call and released her PIN number and her CABS account was cleared of RTGS $15 000.
Dhewa said these cases have surfaced from August 25 to date.
“We encourage account holders to go to banks directly for verification before giving away their PINs because PINs are not sub-ject to sharing,” said Dhewa.
