MASVINGO – People from throughout the World have been touched by the story of the crisis at Ngomahuru Psychiatric Hospital reported in The Mirror in the last two weeks with many groups coming together to mobilise resources.
Many groups delivered goods to the hospital but authorities at Ngomahuru told The Mirror that the story of the tampons overshadowed the food crisis as most people were bringing in sanitary pads.
The story of the crisis went viral on social media.
Groups called The Mirror from as far as South Africa and the UK with requests for information of the hospital. Some of the groups contacted The Mirror to confirm that they had delivered some goods.
Some groups were raising funds for the hospital. The Mirror started a helpline facility to co-ordinate the donations as many calls were coming through the paper.
“The response to the appeal that we made through The Mirror has been good. However, the shortage of tampons has over-shadowed the appeal for food,” said Dr Parirenyatwa Maramba in an interview with The Mirror.
Women Coalition of Zimbabwe (WCOZ), a group from Masvingo and a group from Harare also donated said Angeline Mikiri one of the women who facilitated the campaign.
