Murowa Diamonds disturbs Grade 7 exams in Chivi

MASVINGO –Justice Neville Wamambo of the High Court in Masvingo has ordered Murowa Diamonds to stop its mining activities at Danhamombe Secondary and St Zhara Primary schools in Chivi because the noise is disturbing pupils going through their eternal examinations.
The urgent chamber application made by parents was granted by Justice Wamambo on Tuesday. It said that mining activities would stop on every exam day pending trial set for October 29.
The order also compelled Minister of Mines and Mining Development Winston Chitando and Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Professor Paul Mavima to file their heads of argument before the trial date.
Murowa is cited as the first respondent, Chitando second and Mavima third. Martin Mureri of Matutu, Mureri Legal Practitioners is representing the parents.
The application which was filed by Magret Kasongo, Netsai Mukwaturi, Machakari Mashamanda and Fradreck Nyika says that the mining activities infringe on children’s rights and the vibration is destroying buildings and other infrastructure.
