ZCCSA donates 35t of goods to Cyclone Idai

MUTARE – The Zimbabwe Catholics in South Africa (ZCCSA) has handed over 35 tonnes of goods worth R1 million to Rt Rev Paul Horan, the Bishop of Mutare for onward transmission to the victims of Cyclone Idai.
The consignment which was handed over by ZCCSA’s head of social welfare, Onesmo Zanamwe will be distributed to victims of the disaster in Chipinge, Chimanimani and Buhera Districts, said Bishop Horan during a brief handover at his offices in Mutare two weeks ago.
Caritas, a welfare arm of the church will do the distributions.
The goods that were transported by road include clothes, blankets, toiletries, food, sanitary wear, utensils and many others.
Zanamwe noted that although the bulk of the goods came from the Catholics there were also some contributions from non-Catholics based in South Africa including the heavy haulage truck that ferried the goods which came from SA based professor Amon Saurombe who hails from Chimanimani.
Bishop Horan hailed the donors because the assistance will go a long way considering that thousands of people lost homes, food, breadwinners and matters were worsened by the drought that swept through the country this year.
He also thanked the Secretary in the Ministry of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing, George Magosvongwe for facilitating the duty free entry of the donation into Zimbabwe.
The mobilization of the goods was done through the leadership of the Chaplain and Spiritual Director, Fr Jerome Nyathi, ZCSA executive chairperson Dr Shingirai Mutanga and Zanamwe.
“Greetings in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. I am pleased to inform you that the Zimbabwean Community in South Africa under the leadership of the Chaplain and the Spiritual director, Father Jerome Nyathi has responded to the call for donations for our people who were affected by one of the worst weather related disasters. We are a non-profit Catholic group of Zimbabweans living in Gauteng Province in South Africa.
“The Zimbabwean Catholic Community received these donations from various well-wishers and other denominations and we hope this small contribution will go a long way in assisting these people,” read a letter from the donors to Caritas Zimbabwe.
