Soldiers, Police get bucketfuls of Rands daily

CHIREDZI – Chief Sengwe has made sensational allegations that soldiers with the Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) and Police officers are collecting bucketsful of Rands on a daily basis as they illegally assist border jumpers to cross into South Africa through Chikwalakwala.
He said appeals to Government to stop this rot have yielded nothing.
Speaking in an interview with The Mirror, Chief Sengwe said the security forces in the area get buckets of Rands daily by charging a minimum of R50 for crossing into South Africa.
He said that the practice has been going on for the last 10 years and no one seems bothered to stop it.
Chief Sengwe said at one time ZNA dispatched investigators into the area but one of the investigators lost his life after a shootout with his colleagues.
“This is not a new phenomenon, we raised this issue with Government several times but there is no effort to stop the rot. We are just civilians who are powerless and I am appealing to Government to act. People are illegally crossing into South Africa daily and they are paying large sums of money to soldiers and police officers manning the southern border.
“Many people are assaulted but we have no control over it. The Army once sent a team which came in a passenger bus and joined the border jumpers but they were identified and one of them died during a shootout, so it’s dangerous to deal with the situation” said Chief Sengwe.
