Herald reporter lied about the Commission – VMCZ

HARARE – The Voluntary Media Council of Zimbabwe (VMCZ) has dismissed two cases brought against The Mirror by a Herald reporter who accused the paper of tarnishing his image by reporting that he was subpoenaed to testify before the Land Commission investigating illegal sales of urban State land.
Freedom Mupanedemo who is based in Gweru vehemently told VMCZ that he was neither subpoenaed by the Commission of Inquiry on the sale of State land in and around urban areas nor appeared before it. He said that he never received any communication from the Commission either as a witness or in any capacity.
He dismissed The Mirror story of July 4, 2019 headlined “Herald Reporter appears before Land Commission” as a fabrication and therefore a falsehood that was a personal attack on him. He asked VMCZ which is a complaints centre for media products to order the country’s biggest private regional newspaper to withdraw its story and apologise to him.
The Mirror in response declined to retract the story and insisted that as a reputable, professional and credible newspaper it stood by the story.
The Complaints and Ethics Committee headed by Retired Justice Smith then went about investigating the matter. The committee approached the spokesperson of the Land Commission Virginia Mabiza who is also the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Justice and she confirmed that Mupanedemo was indeed subpoenaed and appeared before the Commission.
Based on the evidence collected, VMCZ dismissed the complaint lodged by Mupanedemo.
After the dismissal, Mupanedemo lodged a fresh complaint in which he now confirmed that he indeed appeared before the Commission but accused The Mirror this time of writing inaccuracies on what transpired during the hearing.
He accused The Mirror of reporting that he received payments from River Valley Properties among several other allegations.
The Commission again dismissed the second complaint on the basis that the founding complaint was flawed.
“Mr Mupanedemo, a senior reporter with The Herald, states that The Mirror in an article on the Commission falsely cited him as having been subpoenaed by the Commission. The complaint argues that he has never received any communication from the said commission, whether as a witness or in any capacity and contends that the inaccurate reporting by The Mirror tarnishes his image,” read part of the VMCZ report.
Meanwhile, The Mirror has received two lawsuits worth over $2million from the Company said to have send Ecocash money to Mupanedemo
