CHIREDZI – A maternity ward at Chiredzi Town Council Poly Clinic re-mains closed four months after the official opening and it now emerges that Zanu PF politicians rushed to open it to take advantage of the First Lady Auxillia Mnangagwa who was present in the area.
The First lady opened the clinic despite that it did not even have an incin-erator which is critical to a maternity ward. The refurbishment of the ward is still a long way to go, said sources.
Official sources said it may even take years before the ward is ready for opening.
The project to re-open the ward is being undertaken by the local council to decongest overcrowding at Chiredzi General Hospital maternity ward where expecting mothers sleep on the floor.
Chiredzi Town Council Chairman Gibson Hwende confirmed the devel-opment and said council was rushed to open the ward by politicians who wanted to gain political mileage. In the 2019 budget council planned to carryout maintenance work at the ward but they were pushed to organise the function for the official opening.
“The ward which was opened some months back remains closed since there are many things which are yet to be sorted out. There is no medical equipment and an incinerator is still to be constructed. The move to offi-cially open it came from Zanu PF politicians most of whom wanted to gain mileage but according to our plans, a lot of work still needs to be done,” said Hwende.
Acting Chiredzi District Medical Officer David Tarumbwa said there are standards set by the Ministry of Health for such a facility to open. He said powers beyond their control pushed the official function but reality is that the ward can take years before it fully operates. #Masvingo Mirror#
