    Prizes galore at MRDC sports gala

    Chirichoga and Mutendi High Schools, Masarasara and Mutenda Primary schools walked away with their heads high after being crowned winners of this years’ edition of the Masvingo Rural District Council (MRDC) sports gala held at Nemamwa Stadium on Friday last week.
    Chirichoga and Masarasara scooped gold in the U20 and U13 soccer competitions while Mutendi and Mutenda prevailed in the U20 and U13 netball competitions respectively.
    The teams walked away with a kit, trophy and $ ZWL 400. All teams that participated also walked away with consolation  prizes with first runner ups getting a kit, 2 balls and ZWL $250, third placed teams got ZWL $ 150 and 3 balls while fourth placed teams got ZWL $100 and four balls. Outstanding players and coaches also received ZWL$50 and 100 respectively.
    The gala in its fourth year running was graced by BN Sports Academy director Bhekimpilo Nyoni, former Dynamos skipper Clayton Munemo, MRDC CEO Martin Mubviro and chairperson Albert Mangena.
    In the U20 soccer category, Mapakomere came second with Morgenster on third position. Nyabata came fourth, and in the U13 category, Machitenda came second with Morgenster on third, Masarasara came fourth. In the U20 netball competitions, Mapanzure came second, Nyabata third with Mushandike on fourth position. Nemarundu came second in the U13 category, Mashava third and Renco on fourth position.
    Fungai Mukamera and Bliss Chigowo of Mutenda Primary were voted best player and best goal scorer in the U13 netball competitions respectively while Lancister Stomach and Chiedza Maburutse of Mutendi High were voted best shooter and best player respectively walking away with ZWL $50 each.
    The tournament had strict vetting processes with district National Association of Primary and Secondary Heads (NASH) and (NAPH) overseeing the processes.
    In the soccer competitions, most matches were decided through penalty shootouts as teams failed to capitalise on chances. Chirichoga in particular beat Nyabata and Mapakomere on penalties to win the trophy.
    Mubviro applauded the lads for their participation and urged them to focus on academia and extracurricular activities like sports.
